Recently, a delegation led by Dr. Nawani Aboki, the Executive Director of the Center for Women Youth & Community Action (NACWYCA), embarked on crucial advocacy visits to key figures in Nasarawa State. The primary focus was to engage the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State and the Speaker of the House of Assembly in championing health insurance initiatives, particularly targeting the informal sector of the state’s populace.
Accompanying Dr. Nawani Aboki were representatives from the Nasarawa State Health Insurance Agency (NASHIA) and the Local Health Strengthening Sustainability (LHSS), Mr. Reuben Yila and Mr. Victor Emmanuel as well as Project Team members from NACWYCA. Their aim was to garner support from these esteemed officials to drive massive enrollment in the health insurance packages offered by NASHIA, thus contributing to the realization of Universal Health Coverage in Nasarawa State.
At the Office of the Chief Judge, the delegation was warmly received by the Chief Registrar, Fatima Labaran, who conveyed the Chief Judge’s enthusiasm for the initiative. Despite the Chief Judge’s absence, Mrs. Labaran assured the delegation of conveying the message and expressed readiness to utilize the adoption model within their communities to extend health insurance coverage to those in need.
Subsequently, the team proceeded to the Office of the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where they were graciously welcomed by the Rt. Honourable Speaker, Danladi Jatau. Dr. Nawani Aboki extended felicitations on behalf of NACWYCA and its partners to the Speaker for his recent elevation. The delegation introduced NASHIA’s health insurance packages, emphasizing the adoption model, and urged the Speaker to advocate for widespread adoption within his constituency to alleviate health-related financial burdens.
In response, Speaker Danladi Jatau expressed gratitude for the support and commended the efforts of NACWYCA, NASHIA, and LHSS in prioritizing the health of vulnerable populations. Recognizing the potential impact of legislative support, Speaker Jatau pledged to mobilize fellow members of the House to embrace the health insurance initiative after the Easter and Sallah break.
Highlighting the importance of awareness and sensitization, Speaker Jatau emphasized the need to reach all segments of society to drive enrollment. He committed to be available for a follow-up visit post-recess to garner broader support among House members, reaffirming his dedication to achieving the program’s objectives.
These advocacy visits mark a significant step towards promoting health insurance and ensuring universal health coverage in Nasarawa State. The commitment shown by both the judiciary and legislative arms of government underscores the collective effort needed to address healthcare challenges and empower vulnerable communities.
