Strengthening Food Security and Community Resilience in Nasarawa State: FSM Project Flag Off in Akwanga LGA

Access to food and improved health outcomes remain central to community development, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. Through the Food Security and Malaria Prevention (FSM) Project, implemented across selected Local Government Areas in Nasarawa State, meaningful steps are being taken to address both challenges in an integrated way.

On 6th March 2026, stakeholders gathered in Akwanga LGA for the official Flag off Ceremony and Distribution of Farm Inputs under the FSM Project. The event brought together key partners including the IHVN Central and State Team, NACWYCA, and officials from the Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme (NADP).

Building Capacity Before Distribution

Prior to the distribution exercise, NADP facilitated practical training sessions for beneficiaries on both home gardening and communal farming. These trainings were designed to ensure that recipients not only receive inputs but also understand how to use them effectively for maximum yield and sustainability.

This capacity-building approach remains a critical component of the project, as it equips households with knowledge that can be sustained beyond the intervention period.

Distribution of Farm Inputs in Akwanga

During the flag off, beneficiaries in Akwanga LGA received essential farming tools, home garden kits, and quality seeds. These inputs are aimed at strengthening household food production, improving nutrition, and encouraging small-scale agricultural productivity.

The intervention is funded by Gesundes Afrika, Germany, as part of its broader commitment to supporting food security and health-focused community development initiatives.

Expanding Impact Across LGAs

Following the Akwanga distribution, farm inputs were also extended to beneficiaries in Kokona and Wamba LGAs. This ensured that the benefits of the intervention were not limited to one location but reached multiple communities within the project implementation areas.

Across all participating LGAs, the FSM Project covered Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga, Kokona, and Wamba.

Project Reach and Beneficiaries

In total, the intervention recorded significant reach across the four LGAs:

  • 400 beneficiaries received communal farming support
  • 266 beneficiaries received home gardening support

This combined approach is designed to strengthen both household-level food production and larger community farming systems.

Driving Long-Term Food and Health Outcomes

The FSM Project is more than a distribution exercise. It represents a coordinated effort to address food insecurity while also reducing malaria vulnerability through improved environmental and nutritional practices.

By supporting households with tools, seeds, and knowledge, the project empowers communities to take active roles in improving their livelihoods and overall well-being.

Conclusion

The Flag off Ceremony in Akwanga LGA marks another important milestone in the ongoing implementation of the FSM Project. With continued collaboration between partners such as IHVN, NACWYCA, NADP, and support from Gesundes Afrika, Germany, the project is steadily contributing to stronger, healthier, and more self-reliant communities across Nasarawa State.
